SEN numeracy planning and resources

I thought I would share some of my planning which I use with SEN/EAL learners.

Here is the first weeks planning with hyperlinks to the resources. I run this over 3 days per week. I think it is important to use real money and not the plastic stuff.

Week 1

Just for a giggle

Emotion bubbles

Click here to download a pdf with different emotion thinking bubbles. Great for discussion or to print off as worksheets for children to write their feelings.

Letters and Sounds phase 2, caption match

Laminate and cut out the cards. Child to match the picture to the text.

Emotion games and cards

The cards could be used for pairs, choosing, dealing out  and discussion.
The game is simply throw a die and if you get 1-4 then you have to think of a situation to share with the other children of when you felt like that.
Great for getting children to open up and discuss their feelings.

Seal - Qualities of a friend

This activity involved me reading the cards and the children deciding whether it was a 'rubbish' statement or a 'treasure' statement. I had a rubbish bin and a treasure box in the middle of the circle. I gave each child a rubbish/treasure card which they had to show first which gave me a good assessment of each child's views.

I just laminated the treasure and rubbish cards back to back

Seal - physical hurt or hurt feelings

I did this activity recently for children to understand the difference between a physical hurt and when someone hurts their feelings. I had a picture of a child who was obviously sad and crying and a child who had hurt their knee. The children had to decide where each scenario would go.

Letters and sounds all phases - one minute game

This is such a simple idea but it works really well. Especially those children that love to compete.
Write a grapheme/tricky word/vowel digraph/spelling etc in the first box. How many times can the child write it in one minute? The letters have to be as neat as possible and all correctly formed.

Practising letter formation/spellings can be boring but doing it this way the child will get lots of practise of writing in a fun way. They also get lots of practise of forming the tricky sounds in phonics like /igh/ /ear/ /air/

Letters and Sounds Phase 3 - bang game

Print, laminate and cut into individual cards. Put in a box and pass round. Children read the word and if correct can keep it. If they pick a 'bang' card then they have to keep the 'bang' card and put all the others that they have won back into the box. The winner is the person who has won the most cards when all the cards have been taken.
