Letters and Sounds - revisit and review

I often start my phonics sessions with a little puzzle. I find the children rise to the challenge and really enjoy it. It is a good way to revisit graphemes from previous phases. This is a dead simple game but I do think the simplest games are the best. Children have a set time of 2 minutes to come up with as many words as they can think of using the graphemes written in the box. I have done a blank one so you can simply write in the graphemes you want to use and then photocopy.
I usually do a target grapheme in green and the rest in black. They have to use the green grapheme in every word. We do sometimes get nonsense words which I do accept as long as the child can read it. Again a good way of just blending sounds. We call these alien words.
After 2 minutes I ask who has got more than 10? More than 9? etc the child with the most reads down their list. Often all my group want to read their words out. All good practise :)

Letters and sounds - Santa's face sound mat

This could be used as an assessment tool. Children to put a piece of cotton wool on each sound they know. It could also be used as a sound mat so children can see how the letters are formed and as a reminder when writing independantly. You could also use it for games. Find the beginning sound for 'cat', find the beginning sound for 'dog', What sound comes at the end of 'tick'. It could also be used as a bingo game.

How many phonemes?

Read a word out and the children have to count the phonemes. They then tick the correct box. Laminate and they can be used over and over.

Rubbish and Treasure game for phonics

I made this today. I love resources that can be used over and over and which have different uses. Hope you like it.

You could print, laminate and children use a dry wipe pen. You could either quickly show a flashcard and then hide it for them to write the correct word either under rubbish or treasure (real word or nonsense word) or you could just say the word and they have to write it. I included a phoneme frame so children could really sound out and write the different phonemes. I have made a few flashcards which are available below on pdf.
